  *  As a further development of the [[Rolex Submariner|Submariner]] Rolex presents the [[Rolex Sea-Dweller|Sea-Dweller]], which is [[waterproof]] up to 610 m (later 1,220 m) and is the first [[dive watch]] in the world equipped with a helium valve.
  *  [[Girard-Perregaux]] starts the industrial production of quartz watches. The frequency of 32,768 A/h, applied by Girard-Perregaux, is later adopted as the international standard for quartz watches. 
  *  With the //Biostar// [[Certina]] launches the world's first watch with a display of biorhythms. 
  *  The American Zenith Radio Corporation of Chicago, America's largest group for the manufacture of electronic components, takes over the majority of shares of the watch manufacturer [[Movado-Zenith-Mondia]] in June.
  *  [[SSIH]] takes control of [[Economic Swiss Time Holding]].
  *  [[ASUAG]] creates [[General Watch Co.]], which includes [[Certina]], [[Edox]], [[Eterna]], [[Mido]], [[Oris]], and [[Technos]]. Later that year, [[Longines]] is added, including [[Record]] and [[Rotary]].
