**Echappement** is the French expression for [[escapement]] (French //échapper// escape). Previously used word for a complete unit including [[balance wheel]] plus [[escapement]].

An escapement system consists of three parts [[escapement wheel]], [[lever]] and [[balance]]. An escapement can be used for various watches with matching [[gear train]].
