A **mechanical watch** is a watch with a mechanical [[movement]]. This is driven either by [[manual winding]] or [[automatic]] winding --- in contrast to electronic [[quartz watch]]es.

After overcoming the so-called [[quartz crisis]], since about [[1983]] watches with mechanical [[movement]]s cover virtually the whole segment of the upper and luxury class of watch production and marketing --- a development that in the late [[1970]]s hardly anyone would have expected.
