The **Calatrava, Ref. 5053** is a modern incarnation of the classic [[Patek Philippe Calatrava]].

This is the [[2001]]-[[2009]] [[Patek Philippe Officer's Watch|Officer's Watch]] from the [[Patek Philippe Calatrava|Calatrava]] line.

Although the [[Patek Philippe Calatrava]] line is best-known for the understated [[Patek Philippe Calatrava 5196|Ref. 5196]] and hobnail-bezel [[Patek Philippe Calatrava 5120|Ref. 5120]], Patek Philippe has been producing an [[officer's watch]] as part of the line [[Patek Philippe Officer's Watch|since 1989]]. That limited-edition piece paved the way for [[Patek Philippe Calatrava 5022|Ref. 5022]] and this [[Patek Philippe Calatrava 5053|Ref. 5053]], both full-production pieces. This reference was introduced in [[2001]] and replaced with [[Patek Philippe Calatrava 5153|Ref. 5153]] after [[2009]].

Introduced in [[2001]], Ref. 5153 is true to the [[Patek Philippe Officer's Watch]] design with one major exception It uses the [[center seconds]] [[PP 315|Cal. 315 S C]] rather than a more-traditional [[small seconds]] movement. Otherwise it is much more similar to the original [[Patek Philippe Calatrava 3960|Ref. 3960]] from [[1989]] than its predecessor, Ref. 5022. The traditional "officer's case" features screwed lugs, a large crown, and a [[hinged case back]] over a sapphire window showing the movement. For this reason, many prefer this reference to its successor, the radically-dialled Ref. 5153.
