====== Precision adjustment ====== ===== Definition ===== **Precision adjustment** is the adjustment of a portable [[watch]] to reach an optimal [[rate]]. Watches are regulated in different temperature ranges and locations to attain a rate as unaltered as possible. A change in the position of a watch can change the rate for a number of reasons (altered center of gravity, other pin friction, etc.). Therefore watches are finely regulated depending on the requirements of the [[precision]] of the rate. [[Chronometer]] watches are finely adjusted in five positions and with three temperatures. Observatories and public test offices check precisely, if the rate is kept within the required limits and issue a [[chronometer certification]] for each watch which meets the demands. Usually the number and type of adjustments is stamped or engraved in the [[movement]]. For example //"adjusted 5 (five) positions and temperature"//.
