**Gerhard D. Wempe** was a German watchmaker and watch entrepreneur.

The trained watchmaker Gerhard Diederich Wilhelm Wempe, on May 5, [[1878]], ventured with his 21 years to step into independence. With a starting capital of 80 marks he founded his own company in Elsfleth, a small town situated near the North Sea on the Lower Weser. In the following years he started shops first in Oldenburg and then in Hamburg. Thus he has laid the foundation for the renowned watch store [[Wempe]].
