The Ref. 16750 GMT-Master replaced the Ref. 1675, which had been produced since 1959. Referred to now as a "transitional" model, this was nevertheless a major update after over two decades, with a new case, bracelet, and movement. The new Cal. 3075 was much more modern, running at 28,800 A/h and adding quickset date, a welcome feature. The new case is also more water resistant, now up to 100 meters.
There are two dial variations of the Ref. 16750: Early examples have a matte black dial, while later models have a glossy black dial and white gold ("gilt") surrounds for the hour markers. The former are now rarely seen and much in demand. Variations included a "Pepsi" model with red and blue bezel as well as an all-black bezel version.
Rolex also produced luxury models of this generation GMT-Master. The Ref. 16753 is a two-tone Rolesor version in steel with yellow gold highlights. There is also a Ref. 16758 in solid yellow gold. This last model also came in a "Serti" dial version set with diamond hour markers and ruby or sapphires at 6, 9, and 12.
