Roskopf, Georg Friedrich

Georg Friedrich Roskopf was a German watchmaker.

Georg Friedrich Roskopf was born on March 15, 1813 in Niederweiler near Lörrach and died on April 14, 1889 in Bern.

He opened 1868 in La Chaux-de-Fonds a watch factory for producing cheaper, but also more reliable pocket watches. He is considered a pioneer in the field of industrial mass production. The simplified gear train named after him and the applied pin-lever escapement were successfully built as Roskopf watch in large numbers till the beginning of the second half of the 20th century.

Roskopf watches were sometimes pejoratively called “montre du prolétaire” (proletarian's watches). In fact, they made a significant contribution to the development of the watch as a luxury object to a commodity for large segments of the population.
