A balance spring is called free-sprung, if the rate of the watch is not regulated by a regulator, but only by tightening or loosening screws attached to the balance.
This is the case with a screw balance such as the Gyromax of Patek Philippe, a cam-poised balance or the Microstella device of Rolex.
