The Magic Lever winding system is a special construction of a winding mechanism developed by Seiko.
This system of an automatic winding was developed by Seiko in the late 1950's and first used in 1961's Cal. 6600. It continues in use today and has been licensed by other watchmakers in Japan, Switzerland, and Germany.
The Magic Lever winding system uses pawls rather than direct gearing between the rotor and barrel. This helps isolate the gear train from shocks. Unlike the IWC Pellaton system, which uses both pawls pull on the barrel, Magic Lever has one pawl to “pull” and another to “push” the barrel.
