Buser Frères & Cie

Buser Frères & Cie SA was a Swiss watch manufacturer based in Niederdorf im Waldenburgertal, Canton Basel-Landschaft. Founded in 1891 in Waldenburg, the firm relocated to Niederdorf in 1902, became a full manufacture in 1916, and operated until its dissolution in 1995.

History

Foundation in Waldenburg (1891)

On 8 September 1891, Albert Buser-Weber, Fritz Buser-Bider, Johannes (“Hans”) Buser, and Albert Berger-Haas founded Gebrüder Buser & Berger (Buser Frères et Berger) in Waldenburg. The firm's oldest known trademark — “AB in oval” — was registered on 6 September 1892.

Albert Buser in Alsace

Around 1895, Albert Buser established an ébauche factory in Gros-Hüningen (Alsace) under the name A. Buser & Co., producing under the brands “Alsatia” and “Esta”. A criminal court in 1898 found that Buser had illegally copied Swiss movements; the factory was likely closed as a result.

Buser Frères & Lohner

Arnold Lohner-Leuenberger joined as partner (Gebrüder Buser & Lohner). In 1902 Lohner left and founded a new factory in Hölstein — the predecessor of Oris.

Niederdorf: Buser Frères (1902–1916)

On 1 January 1902, Albert and Fritz Buser founded Gebrüder Buser (Buser Frères) in Niederdorf. A 1908 advertisement shows the large factory and advertises lever and cylinder watches, Lépine and Savonnette, with interchangeable bridges from 11⅓ to 20 lignes. In 1913 Albert Buser took over sole ownership of the firm.

Full Manufacture: Buser & Cie. (1916–1920)

In February 1916 the firm was restructured as Buser & Cie. The house mark «B in triangle» and the brands Esta and Nidor were registered at the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IGE) on 7 March 1918.

Nidor Watch Co. and the Frenca brand (1920–1928)

From January 1920 until June 1928, the firm's official registered trading name was Buser & Co., Uhrenfabrik «Nidor» — Nidor served as the firm's legal name including for international trade, not merely as a product brand. The ébauche side of the business operated under the brand name «Frenca», which would later become the firm's primary commercial brand.

Refoundation as Buser Frères & Cie SA (1928)

The company was refounded on 30 March 1928 as Gebrüder Buser & Cie. AG / Buser Frères & Cie. SA with share capital of CHF 200,000 (400 registered shares at Fr. 500). The English company name on share certificates reads «Buser Brothers & Co Ltd».

Surviving share certificates (e.g. share No. 101, issued 1 January 1941 to Mrs Val. Buser-Bouguet) document the transfer of equity within the family across multiple generations, ultimately to Franz Buser following Albert Buser's death in 1953.

The Frenca brand (1930s–1950s)

During World War II the firm used the slogan «La Montre du Soldat» (“The Soldier's Watch”) for robust wristwatches with luminous hands, shock protection, and water resistance. Post-war slogan: «Précision Präzision Accuracy Precision». In 1946 Buser launched the «Frenca Automatic» with a full rotating rotor. Albert Buser, head of the firm, died on 8 March 1953 aged 58. Franz Buser became chairman of the board in 1954.

International export

Export documents for the Spanish market (distributed via PUBLICIDAD HELIOS, Madrid) confirm five-position and temperature testing and Vibrograf inspection. The Spanish distribution firm A. Buser, Sucesores Degen S.L. (Madrid) registered the additional brand «Spada» in 1956.

Supply relationships

  • Alfred Dunhill, London (c. 1930–1935): A wristwatch with dial signed “Chronometer / Dunhill / Frenca” documents supply to the London luxury retailer.
  • Gruen Watch Company, USA: documented in specialist literature as a B2B customer.
  • ZentRa: supplied the calibre Buser 18.5 lignes/H4.75 as «ZentRa 42».

G.S.T.P. pocket watches (World War II)

Buser supplied pocket watches to the British Army under the designation G.S.T.P. (General Service Trade Pattern). Case back markings: Broad Arrow · S · G.S.T.P. · FRENCA · Swiss Made. The documented movement is calibre Buser 25/115 (11.5 lignes, manual wind); a variant (25A/115) is also known.

Note: The Royal Air Force operated a separate procurement system (reference codes 6B/159 and 6E/50). Frenca-signed G.S.T.P. pieces are exclusively British Army items, not RAF.

The same calibre Buser 25/115 also appears in the DH/DU archive (german242.com) under category DU (administrative procurement watches), distinct from DH (Wehrmacht combat troops). A DH listing is not documented. This dual supply was standard practice for neutral Swiss exporters; Longines, Zenith, Helvetia, Record and Moeris appear in the same archive.

Movements

  • Buser 25/115 / 25A/115 (11.5 lignes) — G.S.T.P.
  • Buser 95/96/105/106 (18.5 lignes) — pocket watches
  • Buser 145/146 (11.5 lignes, automatic)
  • Buser 180/181/182 (13 lignes) — last independent Buser calibre; continued post-merger as «MSR X1» / «Revue GT82»
  • Buser 310 (Vibraflex) — Buser's own in-house shock protection, identifiable by its characteristic curved retaining spring over the jewel bearing; a reliable indicator of an original Buser in-house movement
  • Buser 330 — based on Peseux 330 ebauche
  • «Frenca 8» — listed in Ranfft as «Frenca» (18 lignes, cylinder escapement)

MSR merger (from 1961)

On 6 September 1961 four manufacturers merged to form the MSR (Manufactures d'Horlogerie Suisses Réunies SA): Revue Thommen (Waldenburg), Vulcain (La Chaux-de-Fonds), Buser Frères & Cie SA (Niederdorf and Reigoldswil), and Phénix Watch Co. SA (Porrentruy). Marvin (Saint-Imier) joined only in 1976.

Within the group, Buser was initially responsible for movement production, later shifting to pressure measuring instruments (manometers). Franz Buser led the Buser division and chaired the MSR board from 1979.

On 31 May 1995 Buser Frères & Cie SA was dissolved and merged into the MSR (assets: CHF 1,973,799.34; liabilities: CHF 507,726.75). The MSR went bankrupt in July 2000.

Buildings

  • Dorfgasse 10: early factory in a former ribbon mill.
  • Hauptstrasse 15/17 (from 1916): new factory by architect Leo Gehri (St. Louis, Alsace); residential house (No. 15) and industrial building (No. 17) directly on the Frenke river.
  • Villa Stephani, Hauptstrasse 5 (1907): manufacturer's villa built by Albert Buser-Weber, Historicist style with decorative painting by Waldenburg artist Wilhelm Kaiser. Listed on the cantonal inventory of protected cultural monuments of Canton Basel-Landschaft since 1998.

Contemporary use of the Buser name

The brand Dekla (based in Stuttgart, Germany) has been using the Buser name for a watch collection since approximately 2023. This production has no corporate or operational connection to the historical Buser Frères & Cie SA of Niederdorf BL; it operates independently in Germany.
