remontoire

Remontoire

A remontoir (from the French remonter, meaning “to wind”) is a watch part.

It is a mechanism which is used to establish a constant force on the gear train. So it stabilizes the driving force coming from the mainspring.

Today sometimes the term is used in contradictory meanings, for example for watches with winding mechanisms in general.
