A mechanical watch is a watch with a mechanical movement. This is driven either by manual winding or automatic winding — in contrast to electronic quartz watches.

After overcoming the so-called quartz crisis, since about 1983 watches with mechanical movements cover virtually the whole segment of the upper and luxury class of watch production and marketing — a development that in the late 1970s hardly anyone would have expected.
