Staff

A staff is a linear component for the forwarding of rotation movements and forces, as well as for bearing of rotating parts. In movements wheels or gears are attached on shafts or drives, whose pivots turn in jewel bearings to reduce the friction.

An example of a typical highly stressed shaft in a watch is the balance staff. To avoid breakage, e.g. when the watch falls to the ground, this is secured by a shock protection.
