A lever escapement is an escapement by means of a stone anchor with pallets. This principle has been invented around 1715 by the English watchmaker George Graham. A further development of the so-called free anchor escapement, also called Swiss lever escapement, was invented in 1765 by Thomas Mudge and is used today in nearly all mechanical wristwatches.
Functional description The escape wheel gives the anchor an impulse to move. While one end is driven forward, the other end engages into the teeth of the gear wheel. This creates a permanent movement - comparable with a rocker.
