Precision adjustment
Definition
Precision adjustment is the adjustment of a portable watch to reach an optimal rate.
Watches are regulated in different temperature ranges and locations to attain a rate as unaltered as possible. A change in the position of a watch can change the rate for a number of reasons (altered center of gravity, other pin friction, etc.). Therefore watches are finely regulated depending on the requirements of the precision of the rate.
Chronometer watches are finely adjusted in five positions and with three temperatures. Observatories and public test offices check precisely, if the rate is kept within the required limits and issue a chronometer certification for each watch which meets the demands. Usually the number and type of adjustments is stamped or engraved in the movement. For example “adjusted 5 (five) positions and temperature”.
