- As a further development of the Submariner Rolex presents the Sea-Dweller, which is waterproof up to 610 m (later 1,220 m) and is the first dive watch in the world equipped with a helium valve.
- Girard-Perregaux starts the industrial production of quartz watches. The frequency of 32,768 A/h, applied by Girard-Perregaux, is later adopted as the international standard for quartz watches.
- With the Biostar Certina launches the world's first watch with a display of biorhythms.
- The American Zenith Radio Corporation of Chicago, America's largest group for the manufacture of electronic components, takes over the majority of shares of the watch manufacturer Movado-Zenith-Mondia in June.
